Method

Architecture joined to manufacturing.

The hyphen in AR-MA is the method. A design is not finished when it is drawn; it is finished when it is made.

Design to production

AR-MA began in 2011 with a simple conviction: that the architect should follow a design into the means of its making, into manufacture, assembly and installation, rather than hand over intent and hope.

For fifteen years that meant working inside other people's projects, alongside fabricators, builders and architects, and learning how buildings are actually cut, folded, bolted and lifted into place. That knowledge is now the foundation of the atelier's own work.

One digital chain

Every part is modelled. The model is the single source of truth: drawings, cutting files and assembly sequences come from it, not beside it. Where no tool exists for the job, the atelier writes one.

Tools

Four principles, four works

  • Concentrate complexity

    580 George Street

1,291 unique panel assemblies, held together by one cruciform bracket. The variety lives in the panels; the fixing stays simple.

  • Variability within constraints

    Wynyard Walk

More than 5,000 stainless steel sheet-metal assemblies, each different, all made within the same rules.

  • Fixed, flexible, free

    Darling Square Library

A timber façade sorted into what must be fixed, what may flex, and what is free, and carried as one integrated model.

  • A system of systems

    Trifolium

A pavilion designed, manufactured and built by the atelier, from more than 3,000 unique pieces.
